The Quinteto Violado (a play on words meaning literally Violated/‘Viola-ed’ Quintet) is an instrumental-vocal group created in October 1971, in Recife, Pernambuco, having as its basic characteristic the rescue and recreation of tradition and folkloric music of Northeast Brazil using elements of scholarly music.
In the beginning it was composed of the musicians Antônio Alves, aka Toinho, vocals and acoustic bass; Marcelo de Vasconcelos Cavalcante Melo, guitar, viola and vocals; Fernando Filizola; Luciano Lira Pimentel, aka Ciano, percussion and Alexandre Johnson dos Anjos, aka Sando, flautist.
The ‘Quintet’, as they were called, performed for the first time in January 1970, at the Faculty of Philosophy at the Federal University of Pernambuco. On presenting at the Nova Jerusalém Theatre in Fazenda Nova in October 1971, its members were called “Os Violados”, giving rise to the name by which the group became famous: Quinteto Violado.
The group was introduced by Gilberto Gil to the musical producer Phonogram and praised by Caetano Velloso, which contributed to it becoming more well-known nationally.
Its first national success was a version of Asa Branca, in 1972, praised by Luiz Gonzaga himself and included on the group’s first album, Quinteto Violado em concerto (in concert). The album was also released in Japan under the title of Asa Branca.
In the same year, the Quinteto performed for a season in the Monsieur Pujol nightclub and at the Di Mônaco restaurant in Rio de Janeiro, as well as at the Vila Velha Theatre in Salvador, Bahia. They played in the show O Anjo Guerreiro contra as baronesas, in Recife.
For their participation in musical research, arrangements and production of a four-album series Música popular do Nordeste (Popular Music of the Northeast), the group received the Noel Rosa and Estácio de Sá awards in 1973, the latter granted by the Museum of Image and Sound in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1973, the Quinteto put together the show A feira, which launched the career of Elba Ramalho and began a concert circuit of Northeast Brazilian music in Brazilian universities.
Two years later, in 1975, they put together the show Folguedo, performing in the courtyard of the São Bento Monastery in Olinda, Pernambuco, as well as performing in international events like MIDEM, one of the world’s biggest gatherings in the music industry in France, and the Encontro Latino-Americano de Turismo, in Trujillo, Peru.
From 1977, they contributed greatly to the excitement of the Recife Carnival, with presentations in the Carnival group Azul, which was important in the return of “Carnaval Participated” to the city streets.
From 1977 to 1978, the group participated in important didactic work, through holding a large number of music workshops or concert-classes for public school students in Pernambuco, besides staging various successful shows.
From the 1990s, the group began to be made up by Toinho, acoustic bass, composer, singer and musical director of the group; Marcelo, violinist, violist, singer and composer; Luciano Alves, Ciano; Roberto Menescal Alves Medeiros, percussionist; and the keyboardist and arranger Eduardo de Carvalho Alves, aka Dudu.
In 1995, the Quinteto produced and recorded the soundtrack for the film Corisco e Dadá, directed by Rosemberg Cariry and for the celebrations of 25 years of activities in 1997, had a résumé of various albums launched in Brazil and abroad, ten international tours; two awards at MPB Shell (1980 e 1981) in Rio de Janeiro and three Sharp Awards for Music (1993, 1994 and 1996).
In 1997, under the presidency of Marcelo Melo, the Quinteto Violado Foundation, FQV, was set up with the objective of exploring, promoting and encouraging, in all forms, the development of Northeast Brazilian culture directly or through agreements with governmental or private institutions and educational or similar entities, to promote exchange experiences in the country and abroad.
In 1998, the book Bodas de frevo: a história do Quinteto Violado (Frevo Marriages: the history of the Quinteto Violado) was released, written by Gilvandro Filho.
